99 -- ELLIPSOIDAL SOLID ALUMINUM MIRRORS SOL RFO-BF2434 DUE 011299 POC Rena Cerbone, TEL. (617)495-7445, FAX (617)495-7485, email: rcerbone@cfa.harvard.edu The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory requires five (5) ellipsoidal solid aluminum mirrors, of a type designated M5 for SAO's submillimeter-wave feed optics for the Submillimeter Array Antennas. Summary properties of M5 are as follows: Overall dimension: 360mm x 304mm x 38.6mm; Focal lengths: F1 1925.4mm, F2 degree s. Surface specifications are as follows: Surface Accurancy (absolute): 3 microns RMS over entire surface, 1 micron RMS over the central region indicated on the drawing to be provided. Surface Finish: Sufficiently specular to permit optical alignment. Less than 0.1% of surface area to be affected by voids or scratches. Coating: Surface protected by SiO overcoat pproximately 0.1 microns thick, or a suitable alternative proposed by the contractor. Offers must include a detailed description of the process, which will be used to achieve the above tolerances. Verification of the surface RMS, and of the orientation of the surface relative to the fiducial tooling balls incorporated into the mirror block, shall be performed on a coordinate measuring machine, (CMM) or by interferometric optical test. If the measurement is by CMM, a rectangular grid of measurement points with a pitch no greater than 6mm shall be employed. If the surface measurement is by optical test, the location of the mirror focii in the test setup must be to the tolerances specified on the drawing. To insure stability of the mirror surface over time, the contractor may choose an aluminum alloy and heat treatment sequence known to achieve satisfactory results with the contractor's fabrication process. Offers be evaluated on price, contractor's past performance, delivery schedule, and contractor's technical description of the processes which will be used to achieve the above tolerances and stability of the mirror surface over time. This solicitation is unrestricted. All responsible sources may submit an offer, which will be considered. Such offers must be supported by information relevant to the evaluation criteria stated above to enable SAO to evaluate offeror's proposal. Contractors may request solicitation and drawing package via fax to Rena Cerbone (617)495-7485 or mail to Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, 60 Garden St., M/S 22, Cambridge, MA 02138 Attn: Rena Cerbone. The applicable SIC code is 3827, size standard of 500 employees. This acquisition is being conducted under the guidelines as set forth in the Simplified Acquisition Procedures (SAP). Posted 12/16/98 (I-SN280983). (0350)
