The Department of Energy, Oakland Operations Office, intends to award a contract on a sole source basis to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to analyze and determine the viability of disposing of excess weapons-grade plutonium in CANDU reactors (advanced design and existing operational reactors). The CANDU reactors will be analyzed for their ability to achieve transformation of weapons-grade plutonium into a form similar to the spent fuel normally produced by the candidate concept, which transforms and eliminates plutonium.
