E-MAIL: Click here to e-mail the contact for this notice., pc_pulver@pnl.gov. The Remote Document System (RDS) The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is conducting a survey to identify potential licensees for the marketing and distribution of the Java-based Remote Document System (RDS Version 1.2) software developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) for the Department of Energy. It is written in Java (Version 1.1.6 of Sun's JDK), and runs either within a Web browser or as a stand-alone desktop application. The Remote Document System (RDS) is a new Web-based application that brings a networked file-store to the hands of all Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer users, regardless of their operating platform. The system is activated by pointing the Web browser to a single Web page, upon which the user is asked to login to the RDS. (A demonstration is available at http://www.emsl.pnl.gov:2080/proj/cip/rds.html by logging in as "Guest"). After logging in, a window appears on the Web browser to display the user's file store (directory), allowing the browsing of these files in a similar fashion to MacOS or Windows 95 desktop. All of the files displayed are actually stored on a remote server and as such can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet. The RDS browser provides the following basic functionality for file management: a.) Files can be uploaded from the user's local machine to the remote server by clicking on the 'Upload' button. b.) Files can be downloaded to the user's local machine from the remote server by clicking on the 'Download' button. c.) Files can be viewed inside the Web browser, using the Quick View feature. This provides a quick way to browse the contents of the files without having to download the file and then open it. d.) Text documents can be created and edited directly on the remote server using the built-in version of the EMSL Publisher (Related product developed in conjunction with RDS) which is a fully featured Java-based word processor. In addition to these basic file management features, RDS is also equipped to enable multiple-authoring of documents over the Web, using access privileges, record locking mechanisms and history tracking. For example, any file that is stored on the remote server can have access privileges set for it, such that one, two or multiple authors can be specified for any specific document. Having been designated an author of a document, the user can edit the document while at the same time locking its access from other users until the editing is finished; a locked document can still be viewed. Emailing is also built into RDS to further facilitate collaboration between authors. A detailed description and full demonstration of the RDS software product is available at the Internet address provided. Interested and qualified firms should respond in writing, emailed, faxed or postmarked no later than December 15th, 1998. Posted 12/02/98 (W-SN276317). (0336)
