A -- ADVANCED HIGH-ENERGY, SINGLE FREQUENCY LASER DEVELOPMENT FOR VISAR VELOCIMETRY SOL CIT-98-170 DUE 120498 POC Christine Ramos, Technology Transfer Specialist, Civilian & Industrial Technology Program Office, Mail Stop C334, P.O. Box 1663, Los Alamos, NM 87545, Tel: (505) 665-6846, Fax: (505) 665-6127, E-mail: ctramos@lanl.gov E-MAIL: ctramos@lanl.gov, ctramos@lanl.gov. The University of California, which operates Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under contract to the Department of Energy, solicits interest from companies wishing to collaborate, develop, and then market a unique laser source. This primary goal for this laser will be to provide high energy narrow linewidth long pulses at 532nm for use in Velocity Interferometry for a Surface of Any Reflector (VISAR). The final laser system must be compact and user friendly so as to make it readily adaptable to a multitude of experimental requirements. Parameters for the laser will include the capability of delivering hundreds of millijoules of 532nm light with a spectral linewidth of <20MHz in pulses up to 100 microseconds in duration. Variability in the pulse shape is highly desirable, to accommodate for the changing reflectivity of VISAR targets. With respect to the compactness and portability of the laser, amplification stages will need to be minimized; hence high efficiency frequency conversion beyond the typical 10% is a goal. To meet this requirement, novel frequency conversion techniques will need to be developed and utilized in the final design. An acceptable system will prove to be rugged and reliable, and reasonably simple to operate. Those companies interested in pursuing this opportunity should respond with a Letter of Interest that they satisfy the minimum criteria. The interested parties must possess, or have access to existing capabilities in research, development, marketing and support services in the domestic marketplace, preferably related to this technology. The collaborative partner will be selected based on a demonstrated expertise in a multitude of areas. The technical expertise and experience in the field of custom solid state lasers will be foremost in choosing a partner. The practical engineering of products along with proven reliability record will be considered. The selected company should be a recognized world leader in custom laser development, with a proven track record of providing quality, flexible products. Previous experience with R&D project within the DOE complex is desirable. The company must have flexibility for accommodating changing parameters as the system is refined. Any interested organization selected as a partner will be expected to work under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) or a Funds-In Agreement (FIA) to continue the development of this technology and adaptations to other applications. The Letter of Interest must be received by close of business (5pm MST) December 4, 1998. Posted 11/17/98 (W-SN272242). (0321)
