Nguyen, Contract Specialist, 301-496-6546 The BioEngineering Consortium (BECON), Office of Extramural Research, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health, intends to procure on a sole source basis specialized conference management services from Prospect Associates, 10720 Columbia Pike, Suite 500, Silver Spring, MD 20901, to assist with planning and conducting the NIH BECON Biomedical Imaging Symposium to be held at the Natcher Conference Center on March 22-23, 1999. The BECON hosted a successful Symposium titled Bioengineering: Building the Future of Biology and Medicine on February 27-28, 1998 for the following purposes: Identify grand challenges in biomedical research that can benefit from bioengineering approaches; Define the role of bioengineering in future advancements in biomedical research; Determine how to integrate bioengineering with biological research to meet those challenges; Show case accomplishments of NIH-funded bioengineering researchers; Increase the visibility of bioengineering to the NIH intramural research community; Increase the visibility of bioengineering to the extramural biomedical research community; Increase the visibility of bioengineering to the NIH leadership and staff; and Make recommendations to the NIH for areas of future investment. Because of the success of that Symposium, NIH BECON decided to hold yearly Symposiums which would be focussed on a specific area in Bioengineering. The focus for the next symposium is Bioimaging. Prospect assisted the NIH BECON in the planning and conducting the first symposium. The knowledge and specialized experience that Prospect gained about the BECON by assisting with that symposium, makes them uniquely qualified to accomplish the required conference management support for the following reasons: Prospect offers a team of Web development specialists who understand the balance of technology, design, and content. Prospect staff have experience with a wide range of electronic publishing tasks, including website planning, design (and redesign), development, maintenance, overall task management and process coordination, document design and redesign, HTML conversation and programming, and PDF/ASCII uploading. Prospect can provide hosting services, network development, database design. Prospect staff are experienced in designing and developing homepages/Websites, including graphics and animation. Prospect has a staff of highly skilled professionals across a wide range of health science disciplines, including expert science writers who can compile and analyze information and prepare background papers for technology assessment and transfer activities, including emerging biomedical and bioimaging technologies. Prospect's sole focus is biomedicine and health which is directly related to BECON's daily involvement with using scientific knowledge bases related to biomedical research and technology. Prospect has gained unique expertise and experience while supporting the following relevant NIH conferences: "Biomaterials and Medical Implant Science: Present and Future Perspectives" and "Bioengineering: Building the Future of Biology and Medicine". By virtue of its unique experience gained in assisting with previous workshops, expertise and staff resources in support of BECON, Prospect is the only source that can successfully provide the required specialized conference management support services within the time constraints.
