Road decommissioning work consists of constructing a vehicle access barrier at the beginning of the road, ripping the entire road surface, leaving a 6 foot wide trail tread, constructing rolling dips, and cleaning culvert inlets and outlets. Trail construction consists of clearing and grubbing, excavation, construction of retaining walls, construction of a shallow stream ford, switch back construction, climbing turn construction and drainage control measures (culverts & ditches. Decommissioned road segment is 0.57 miles and one trail segment is 0.8 miles, both designed for barrier free accessability with a high degree of difficulty. 1.37 miles of trail is standard hiker trail with an 18 inch tread, wider in some sections. To reach the project take Hwy 36 east from Hwy 101 south of Fortuna, CA. Take Hwy 36 past the town ofDinsmore and a few miles past the Mad River Ranger District, then take Co. Rd 501 towards Ruth Lake Reservoir, then on to Fir Cove Campground, adjacent to Bailey Canyon Campground. Price range is between $25,000 and $100,000.
