Green, tsg@inel.gov. Established in 1949 by the U.S. government for
nuclear research, the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory (INEEL) has expanded its mission to include the transfer of
technology to private industry, universities, and other government
organizations; improved energy efficiency; non-nuclear energy
development; environmental research; and other areas of science and
engineering. The INEEL coal-fired steam generation facility is
available to private industry, government agencies, and university
researchers for the purpose of conducting engineering scale tests.
Constructed in 1983, the coal fired steam generation facility at the
INEEL offers a one of a kind test facility in terms of its size and
operational flexibility. The availability of the INEEL's coal fired
steam generation facility is unique in the fact that it provides a
cost-effective facility where engineering scaled tests can be performed
with the necessary operational and infrastructure support in place. The
type of tests capable of being performed at the facility include:
1)Trial burns for emissions analysis; 2)Trial burns with up to 30%
process derived fuel; 3)Trial burns of low grade fuels; 4)Process
derived fuel manufacture; 5)Alternate adsorbent bed material
evaluations; 6)Boiler erosion/corrosion analysis; 7)Boiler scaling;
8)Bag house performance testing; 9)Particulate capture and
re-injection. The facility has the capability to perform these tests 24
hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, the facility has the
operational flexibility to add additional sensing equipment and make
the necessary equipment modifications or additions to meet specific
test objectives. Steam generation facility specifications are as
follows:(1)Boilers: 2 Foster Wheeler Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Boilers;
(2)Capacity: 70,000-pounds steam generation per hour; (3)Operating
Pressure: 150 psig; (4)Bed Design: Bubbling (Limestone) Particulate
Control: Pulsed Jet Bag House; (5)Fuel Feed: Detroit Overbed Feeders;
(6)Fuel Types: Stoker Coal, Processed Derived Fuel, Liquid/Solid Fuel
Mixtures; (7)Boiler Sample Ports: Fuel Feed, Bottom Ash, Fly Ash;
(8)Fuel Receiving/Unloading: Railcar or truck. Also available at the
INEEL is a cuber system capable of manufacturing a wide variety of
process engineered fuels. The system is equipped with a shredder and
multiple ports for metered injection of either solids or liquids. The
cuber, which is capable of producing up to six tons of fuel per hour,
can produce either round or square cubes in a variety of sizes.
Additionally, the length and density of the cubes can be designed to
meet customer specifications. The cuber system specifications are as
follows: (1)Cuber Capacity: Six tons/hour; (2)Cube sizes (inches):
0.75, 1.0, 1.125, 1.25 (square cubes), .875, 1.0, 1.25 (round cubes);
(3)Cube Density: 0.9 to 1.4 (Coal reference of 1.2); (4)Liquid
Injection Ports: 4 with 2.5 to 22 gallons/hour capacity with a maximum
of 60 gallons/hour total; (5)Solids Injection: 1 to 300 pounds/hour;
(6)Shredder Capacity: Six tons/hour; (7)Fuel storage: 100-Ton Covered
Fuel Storage Area. The facility is fully equipped with a continuous
emission control system. Additionally, the facility has a mobile
mounted air analyzer for certification of the stack's emission
monitoring system that can be modified to meet project-specific
requirements. Parameters measured by the two systems include the
following: (1)Continuous Emission Monitoring System -- SO2, NO2,
O2,CO2, Opacity; (2)Mobile Mounted Air Analyzer -- SO2, NO2, O2,
Project specific emissions. If you would like more information
