1998 MINES, COUNTERMINE & DEMOLITIONS SYMPOSIUM & EXHIBITION 1998 Mines, Countermine & Demolitions Symposium & Exhibition, September 27-29, 1998, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. Since the President of the United States announced his policy on anti-personnel landmines (APL's) on September 17, 1997, the Department of Defense (DoD) has made significant headway in taking actions directed by the Secretary of Defense to implement the President's APL policy. The Department has begun an aggressive research and development program to provide effective APL alternatives that will ultimately permit the United States to end its reliance on APL's. The overall progress to date clearly demonstrates the DoD support of the policy and its commitment to end reliance on APL's as soon as possible. This symposium will address the US policy. Warfighter's view of the APL's and what has been accomplished in each of the multifaceted areas specified in the Secretary's direction. International representatives will also provide their nations' activities in finding APL alternatives. Recent military actions have demonstrated the necessity for continual research and development in the areas of mine detection and neutralization. This symposium will also provide a forum for discussions in countermine technology initiatives and trends. Users will make presentations on requirements, materiel developers on challenges and on-going programs and scientific researchers on emerging technologies and initiatives. Mr. Jan Lodal, Principal Deputy, Office of Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and been invited to deliver the Keynote Speech. Other speakers will include LTG Randolph W. House (invited), Chief of Staff, US Forces Korea, MG Robert Flowers, Commandant, US Army Engineer School, MG Roy E. Beauchamp, Commanding General, US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, and speakers from Germany, France, Australia, and United Kingdom.
