79036 B -- ARCHEOLOGICAL INVENTORY SURVEY SOL 1443RQ754098003 DUE 092598 POC
Diane Van Tatenhove 806-857-0311 On June 29, 1998 a wildfire that was
probably started by arson spread onto Alibates Flint Quarries National
Monument burning the entire 1,370 acres authorized land area and
burned approximately 2,954 acres of the adjoining Lake Meredith
National Recreation Area. The fire's devastation denuded the landscape
providing a brief window of opportunity to conduct a highly effective
inventory of archeological resources before the vegetation recovers.
Many of the archeological resources contained in the areas are
considered to be nationally significant. The National Park Service,
acting through Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates
Flint Quarries National Mounment, proposes to have an archeological
inventory survey competed on 1,371 acres of land at Alibates Flint
Quarries National Monument. In addition, an archeological survey
consisting of a 20% sample of 2,954 acres recently burned by wildfire
at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is proposed. No artifacts
will be collected during the surveys. The object of the two pedstrian
surveys is to identify all archeological resources and collect
sufficient data to describe their distribution, general
characteristics, existing site conditions, threats, and scientific
values. All or part of this contract may or may not be awarded
depending on availability of funds. Posted 08/11/98 (W-SN235371).
