The U.S. DOE's FETC announces the availability of Program Research and Development Announcement (PRDA) No. DE-RA26-98FT40394 entitled, "Improved and Innovative Technologies for Decontamination and Decommissioning." These activities are being sponsored by the DOE's Office Environmental Management's (EM), Office of Science and Technology (OST), Deactivation and Decommissioning Focus Area (DDFA). The objective of this PRDA is to award contracts that will demonstrate at full-scale, improved and/or innovative technologies for decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of the facilities within DOE weapon complex. It is also contemplated that the solicitation will include a mechanism for deploying the most promising technologies emerging from the demonstration phase. The primary performance objective of the demonstration is to comprehensively and quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of proposed technologies in improving the safety, schedule, risk, and cost of the D&D efforts. The selected technologies will be demonstrated in Large-Scale Demonstration and Deployment Projects (LSDDPs) and other major D&D projects at one of the following DOE sites: MEMP Mound plant, Miamisburg, Ohio; Savannah River site, Aiken, South Carolina; Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico; Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Hanford Reservation, Richland, Washington. Only developed technologies ready for a full-scale demonstration in real D&D projects will be eligible for consideration under this solicitation. The demonstration will be performed in real-time, full-scale D&D activities and compared side by side with existing baseline technologies. The D&D technology needs' areas include characterization, decontamination, dismantlement, waste disposition, worker protection, and others. The solicitation should be available in late August, 1998; a 60-day response time is anticipated. The solicitation will be posted on the FETC Homepage for distribution purposes; offerors are encouraged to download the solicitation.
