99 -- ANIMAL CARE AND TESTING SERVICES SOL NOI-9809 DUE 091898 POC Carolyn Sentz, Contracting Officer/Sophia Janus,Purchasing Agent/301-402-2284 Vendor will breed, purchase, or procure approximately 300 INOS gene knockout mice and approximately 300 APO E deficient mice for specific studies addressing the role of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and atherosclerosis. The vendor will be responsible for housing and providing animal care facilities for these animals, and the appropriate P3 facility during the inoculation/infection experiments. The vendor will be responsible for infecting the animals with Chlamydia pneumoniae inoculation which will be prepared by Dr. Thomas Quinn,LIR,NIAID. The vendor will appropiately treat the animals with antibiotics at specified time intervals and sacrifice the animals to provide tissue to Dr. Thomas Quinn,LIR,NIAID. We are intending to procure animal care and testing services from Johns Hopkins University since they are the primary breeders of the specific animals we wish to experiment on, the APO E deficient and INOS gene knockout mice. These are ongoing experiments in which the same breed of animals raised by Johns Hopkins have been utilized and for continuity of the experiment we wish to continue utilizing the same animals, otherwise the government will be harmed and the experiment deemed invalid if the breed is changed in its strain. Johns Hopkins also provides the P3 facility and the same environment in which our previous experiments with these animals have been carried out and consequently, again for continuity of experiments, it is deemed absolutely necessary that Johns Hopkins remain the sole source provider of these animals care facilities.
