10 -- EQUILIBRATOR ASSEMBLY DUE 071498 POC Contract Specialist/Barbara J. Abbas (309) 782-7158, Contracting Officer/Barry R. Hartleben, (309) 782-7116 Availability of existing commercial or nondevelopmental items for the support of the 155mm M198 Towed Howitzer Artillery System as indicated below. EQUILIBRATOR ASSEMBLY is an upper carriage component for the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer Artillery System. It is a pneumatic device that uses compressed gas to overcome the unbalanced weight of the cannon and keep it in balance at all angles of elevation, so the cannon tube may be elevated or depressed by hand. It is designed to apply greater forces to the elevating members of the howitzer when at low elevations and progressively smaller forces as the weapon is elevated. It primarily consists of a cylinder, an inner sleeve, a movable piston assembly, compressed nitrogen gas, appropriate packing glands, seals and rings, pressure bellows, filling valve, hose clamps and connection bearings on both ends. It has a diameter dimension of 5.875 inches and an approximate length of 48.00 inches in a fully extended position. The major components of this assy are manufactured or machined from steel material composition 4130, 4140, 4340, 8630 stock or a forging. The assy is also comprised of Military Standard and commercial parts. EQUILIBRATOR END is a component of an equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. It attaches the assy to the upper carriage of the howitzer to keep the cannon in balance at all angles of elevation so the cannon tube can be elevated or depressed. It is a manufactured component by itself in that it does contain any other parts or components. It has an overall diameter dimension of 5.875 inches and an approximate length of 6.00 inches. It is forged and machined from steel material, Grade 4130, 4140, 4340 or 8630 per ASTM A322 or A331. The end is heat treated to a hardness of Rockwell C33-38. SLEEVE BEARING is a component of an equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. It is an internal component of the equilibrator that forms a part of its piston assy. It contains no other components or parts in its manufactured form. It is a cylinder and has a diameter dimension of 4.00 inches and a length dimension of 29.00 inches. It is manufactured from steel tubing material, grade 4135 per MIL-T-6735 or grade 4140 or 8648 per ASTM A519. The sleeve bearing is heat treated to a Rockwell hardness of C33-38. ACTUATING CYLINDER is a component of an equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm M198 Towed Howitzer. It houses the piston assy, rod and seals of the equilibrator assy. The cylinder is a separate component that contains no other parts. The cylinder has a diameter dimension of 7.00 inches and an overall length dimension of 29.78 inches. The actuating cylinder is manufactured from steel tubing material, grade 4140, 4340, or 8640 per ASTM A519 and is coated with a black oxide finish. The actuating cylinder is heat treated to a hardness of Rockwell C32-38. RETAINING PLATE is a component of the equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. The retainer houses the bearing sleeve and seal for the equilibrator piston. It contains no other components in its manufactured configuration. It has an outside threaded diameter dimension 5.750 inches and a thickness dimension of 1.220 inches. It is machined from steel material, grade 4130, 4140, 4340 or 8630 or is made from a forging per MIL-S-46172 and is coated with a black oxide finish. The retaining plate is heat treated to a Rockwell hardness of C30-34. BEARING SLEEVE is a component of the equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. It acts as a bearing sleeve for the piston rod of the equilibrator. The bearing sleeve is source controlled to Greene Tweed Industries Inc. LINEAR PISTON ROD is a component of the equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. This part acts as the piston rod for the equilibrator. It contains no other components in its manufactured form. It has an outside diameter of 1.623 inches and an overall length dimension of 32.83 inches. It is manufactured from steel material, grade 4140 or 4340 and is finished with a chromium coating and black oxide coating. The piston rod is heat treated to a hardness of Rockwell C34-38. PISTON is a component of the equilibrator assy used on the upper carriage of the 155mm, M198 Towed Howitzer. This part is used as the piston inside of the assy. It contains no other components in its manufactured form. It has an outside diameter dimension of 3.983 inches and a length dimension of 2.50 inches. It is manufactured from steel material, grade 4140, 4340 or 8630 per ASTM A322 or A331 or it may be made from a forging in accordance with MIL-S-46172, Grade D. It is heat treated to a hardness of Rockwell C34-38 and is coated with a black oxide finish.
