Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of
Health (NIH), is seeking a contract for animal care and housing support
services for the study of slow, latent and temperate infections of the
nervous system caused by conventional and unconventional viruses, and
for the maintenance of a specific pathogen free rhesus monkey breeding
colony. Housing and care of these colonies includes providing animal
management, veterinary care and treatment, laboratory services, and
other technical support and specified on-site facilities as described
in the Request for Proposals (RFP), in an isolated, scrapie-free
environment. The research animal colony currently includes
approximately 260 nonhuman primates, and 4 horses. Included in the
nonhuman primates are 84 chimpanzees, 20 Old World monkeys, and 152 New
World monkeys, in support of ongoing, long-term research studies. The
present population of the rhesus monkey breeding colony is
approximately 114 monkeys. Offerors must have on-site veterinary care,
extensive knowledge of and experience with infectious diseases, and be
well versed in prescribed guidelines on the use and care of laboratory
animals. The Contractor must be able to immediately (within thirty
(30) days following award of a contract) provide AAALAC accredited
state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor caging of the animals described in
the RFP. The research animal colony must be hoursed spearately by
species, must have supporting clinical examining and treatment rooms,
and surgical rooms adjacent to their housing areas, all of which must
be AAALAC approved. It is anticipated that one award will be made for
a period of five years in October, 1998. This is not a RFP. THE
