PLANNING/REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TRAINING PROGRAM IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

intends to sign a five-year, non-competitive cooperative agreement with
The Johns Hopkins Program for International Education and Training in
Reproductive Health (JHPIEGO), affiliated with Johns Hopkins
University, for a worldwide family planning/reproductive health
training program in developing countries. This agreement will support
a comprehensive, worldwide, international reproductive health and
family planning (FP/RH) training program affiliated with an American
university, to: Support ongoing pre-service medical and paramedical
education programs in approximately 30 developing countries to update
and modernize the family planning and reproductive health curricula,
train master trainers and faculty members; develop and strengthen
clinical training sites; and institutionalize FP/RH training for
undergraduates, interns, residents and OB/GYN specialists; maintain a
collaborating network of OB-GYN Departments of developing country
medical schools. Continue to develop the capacity of in-service
training programs in 30 countries to train their own health care
personnel to deliver quality FP/RH services, especially long-term and
clinical methods. JHPIEGO is currently providing financial and/or
technical assistance to an average of 62 projects in 29 countries per
year. These activities are implemented by a professional staff of more
than 100 persons and a pool of over 200 international consultant
experts. JHPIEGO has in-country offices in Indonesia, Nepal, Turkey,
Kenya, Uganda and Cote d'Ivoire. Provide ongoing technical assistance
to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of reproductive health
training including appropriate, state-of-the-art: performance-based
training, distance learning, computer-assisted learning, community
learning centers, on-the-job training, and video conferencing. Continue
to provide global leadership in the development and revision of
clinical and non-clinical training materials and reference manuals that
include up-to-date knowledge and standards in FP/RH, quality of
care,improved client-provider interaction, gender issues, STDs, and
HIV/AIDS. Also continue to provide global leadership in cross-cutting
issues including: client-centered FP/RH services, informed choice and
informed consent, post- abortion care, infection prevention, adolescent
reproductive health, cervical cancer prevention, essential maternal
health care and national capacity building. Assist policy and
reproductive health leaders in 30 countries to develop and use national
FP/RH service guidelines to maximize access to and quality of family
planning and reproductive health services. Evaluate the impact of these
guidelines on service access and quality. The guidelines provide
standards for provider performance on-the-job and should be utilized in
the development of of pre-service and in-service training curricula and
at clinical training sites. Demonstrate improvements in provider
performance and the quality of reproductive health services through
training and selected support activities including: management and
supervision, interpersonal communication/counselling,
mentoring/coaching, aand improving the enabling environment for
training. Evaluate the impact of FP/RH training and education on
improved provider behavior and quality of client care. Design and
implement special studies and publish technical reports on the
effectiveness, efficiency, and cost of pre-service and in-service
training. Continue to develop a project monitoring system which
includes measures/benchmarks for national capacity building. Provide
continued technical assistance to increase the number of international
FP/RH leaders, faculty members, trainers and consultants capable of
providing training and leadership in FP/RH on a national, regional or
