17. Request for Information. The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting
a market search for firms that can provide (under a lease-with-
option-to-buy) an advanced borehole imaging system (ABIS) for use in
fractured rock studies. Lease will be through 9/30/98 with purchase
pending availability of FY 99 funds. Components are 1) lightweight
motor-driven remote-controlled winch with Kevlar cable approximately
300 meters in length (winch shall also be capable of being operated
manually); 2) a control unit and a 640mb magnetic optical disk storage
device; 3) a pulley/depth encoder that attaches to the well casing; 4)
an imaging probe that has the capability of producing and digitally
storing an oriented 360 degree side wall image; the probe will also
have capability for upgrade to include a fish-eye image; 5) a software
analysis package compatible with Windows 95 and capable of producing
and plotting digital deviation files, calculating strike and dip of
fractures corrected for borehole deviation, and presenting a virtual
core image that can be rotated and oriented using at least two methods,
i.e. flux gate magnetometer and compass. Essential physical
characteristics: a) light source must enable the system to reproduce
natural rock colors; b) image resolution: 0.25 mm vertical resolution,
720 pixels/circumference; c) diameter of probe must allow operation in
a 56mm hole; d) built-in inclinometer to record borehole deviation for
the automatic correction of hole deviation in data processing; e)
ability to allow users to view data and calculate strike and dip of
features; f) ability to integrate with Government-owned Mala Geoscience
borehole radar system cable and winch and standard 44-conductor cable
and winch (to allow ABIS to operate on same optical winch assembly as
the borehole radar system). Firms that can provide the equipment
described in this announcement are invited to submit literature
describing available commercial equipment, warranty provisions and
pricing. Information should be submitted to this officewithin 15
calendar days from the date of publication of this announcement to the
above address. This is not an RFP. This announcement is only for the
purpose of verifying available sources. Any questions should be
addressed in writing to Ms. Susan Pimble at the address specified in
this announcement or email to spimble@usgs.gov.***** MMMM (0072) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0357 19980317\66-0013.SOL)
