Project involves repairs to an existing 1.7 mile long concrete tunnel on the abandoned Milwaukee Railroad grade. The rail and ties were previously removed and the tunnel will be used as a recreational facility (bike path). The work consists of structural concrete repairs to tunnel walls, crown, beams and columns. Other miscellaneous items include removal of tunnel closure panels and sediment controls. Additive bid items include boring approximatetly 200 two-inch diameter weep holes and concrete curb repairs. The St. Paul Pass Tunnel is located on the abandoned Milwaukee Railroad grade on the State divide between Idaho and Montana (East Portal in Montana, T19N, R32W, S23 and West Portal in Idaho, T47N, R6E, S35). Access to the projec is by taking I-90 east from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Proceed over Lookout Pass on I-90 into Montana. Take the Taft exit located approximately 4 miles west of Saltese, Montana.Proceed southwest on Forest Route No. 506 approximately 2 miles to the East Portal. This project will be advertised with a request for proposals (RFP). Proposals will be evaluated based on the technical approach to performing the work, quality control plan, past performance on a similar projects, experience of key personnel with similar work, subcontractors to be used, and total cost. A prebid tour is scheduled on April 23, 1998 at 10:00 a.m., MST, meeting at the junction of Road 506 and Interstate 90 exit at Taft, near the State sand pile. Prospective bidders should provide their own transportion and lunch. The road may be rough and icey, so 4-wheel drives are recommended. The tunnel is wet and cold and must be walked on foot, so bring rubber boots (water is 6 to 12 inches deep in places), warm clothes, and a strong flashight. The 1.7 mile long tunnel has locked doors at both ends. We will walk the entire tunnel if bidders are interested in doing so. The will be the only opportunity to view the interior of the tunnel.
