National Cancer Institute, Research Contracts Branch, ESS, Executive Plaza South, Rm. 620, 6120 Executive Blvd., MSC 7224, Bethesda, MD 20892-7224

A -- DIETARY FAT, COOKING PRACTICES, INDOOR RADON, AND LUNG CANCER AMONG WOMEN SOL N01-CP-21102 POC Mary E. Landi O'Leary; Contracting Officer; 301-496-8611 E-MAIL: Mary E. Landi O'Leary, olearym@rcb.nci.nih.gov. The National Cancer Institute intends to negotiate with Battelle Memorial Institute for a 24 month extension of contract NO1-CP-21102. Under the current contract Battelle Memorial Institute has used surface monitoring devices (CR-39 detectors) to estimate cumulative 20-year domestic radon exposure of women in a case-control study of lung cancer etiology. The extension will provide the contractor with an opportunity to calibrate the monitoring devices in homes that have had comprehensive radon monitoring performed over an extended period of time. As part of the same contract extension Battelle Memorial Institute will collect tumor tissue from hospitals and pathology laboratories on cases subject from our study. Collecting pathology materials from case subjects is an extension of ongoing efforts by the contractor. Authority for this action is 41USC(c)(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. Inherent duplication of cost to the government in setting up new instrumentation to read the surface monitors and to enterinto new collaborations with hospitals across Missouri makes competition unfeasible for this final phase of the study. Numbered Note 22 applies as follows: The proposed contract action is for supplies or services for which the Government intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source under the authority of FAR 6.302. Interested persons may identify their interest and capability to respond to the requirement or submit proposals. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals. However, all proposals received within forty-five days (thirty days if award is issued under an existing basic ordering agreement) after date of publication of this synopsis will be considered by the Government. A determination by the Government not to compete with this proposed contract based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received will normally be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. No collect calls will be accepted. (0057)
