The U.S. Geological Survey has a requirement for a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to assist in the processing, analyzing, and reporting of chemical results back to customers on water, sediment, and biological materials. The LIMS must perform the following functions: log-in of samples; creation of analyst generated worklists; label printing, bar coding and sample tracking; data acquisition from analytical instruments and contract labs; generation of customized billing files; generation of quality control/quality assurance (QA/QC) control charts and records; generation of analytical reports; support of manual (through forms) and automatic (electronic formatted files) entry of data; support of chain of custody protocol; documentation of audit trail, documentation of security, generation of ad-hoc management reports, generation of end-user defined retrieval of data for exporting into other software (statistics, graphics, world wide web compatible files); electronic distribution of data: support the use of reference data tables; allow maintenance of reference data tables; and archive data.
