columbia@fetc.doe.gov. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Federal
Energy Technology Center (FETC) is soliciting proposals to test porous
metal compositions for their ability to withstand the corrosive
environment found in PFBC power generation systems. The objective of
this work is to fabricate and evaluate the corrosion resistance of
porous metal filter media under simulated and actual PFBC conditions.
The expected result of the work is selection of a porous metal
composition that can be used as a filter element in PFBC power
generation systems. The filtration media developed will provide
filtration performance equal to or better than that provided by
commercially available ceramic filter media. However, metal filters are
expected to provide non-brittle mechanical behavior and improved
resistance to thermal stress damage compared with ceramic filter
elements. The scope of the project is to fabricate porous samples of
various metal materials and expose them to simulated and actual PFBC
hot gas cleanup conditions to determine if they can be used as filter
materials in PFBC systems. The contractor shall obtain or fabricate
porous metal filter media of various compositions, and expose them to
simulated corrosion conditions in the laboratory as well as actual
coal-fired operating conditions at a field site. Analyses will be
performed to determine corrosion mechanisms and to predict filter
element lifetimes. The resulting contract from this solicitation will
contain an option for fabricating filter elements and installing them
in an operating hot gas filtration system. The RFP is expected to be
released on or about February 24, 1998. The solicitation (available in
Portable Document Format (PDF)) will be issued only on DOE's FETC
WORLD Wide Web Server Internet System at http:www.fetc.doe.gov (select
Business, then Solicitations) and will not be distributed in paper
form. Those who obtain a copy of the solicitation through the WWW
should check the location frequently for any solicitation
