The Area Attack Systems Program Office ASC/YHJ will be holding an informational Industry Day (for prospective prime contractors) on 17 March 98, 0800-1200 at Eglin AFB, FL.. All interested companies are invited to attend and provide feedback on our program. Companies are limited to 4 attendees. The industry day is unclassified; however, security clearances will be requested in the event that classified information might be discussed. Request reply NLT 13 Jan 97 to ASC/YHJ, Attn: Capt. Scott Pigeon, Eglin AFB, FL 32542-6808. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: The BRU-55 allows carriage of two smart weapons (up to 1000lb class) on a single aircraft station. BRU-55 weapons currently consist of JSOW, 1000 lb JDAM, and WCMD. Future expansion is possible to other MIL-STD-1760 aircraft and weapons. The Air Force's BRU-55A/A consists of the BRU-33 strongback (GFE from the Navy), 2 x BRU-46 ejector units, and electronics (being developed under the EMD contract). The BRU-55 is 70" long, 26" wide, and weighs 240 pounds. Itsaircraft interface is 30" lugs and single -1760 umbilical. Its weapons interface is 14" lugs and one -1760 umbilical each. PROGRAM STATUS: The BRU-55 program is currently in development under an EMD contract. Critical Design Review will took place on 18 Nov 97 with the initial qualification testing beginning in at the end of January 1998. The electronics being added to the rack allow the F-16 to address two 1,000 pound class smart weapons per station, doubling F-16 smart weapon capability. Minimal logistics footprint by using existing hardware with the new "Smarts". F-16's can drop "dumb" weapons from the "Smart Rack" thus eliminating the "dumb" TER-9A bomb rack, while reducing the logistics footprint i.e. support/test equipment, tech manuals, course instruction. Air Combat Command's maintenance philosophy will be contractor logistics supported. Flight testing begins in August 1998. The BRU-55 acquisition strategy is for a firm fixed price competed production effort. Draft RFP is planned for release late FY98 with subsequent award 31 Mar 99. (0346)
