Nickells, pnickel@pica.army.mil. Interested parties are being sought
for the continued development of an elastomer type breech seal for the
XM297 Cannon, which utilizes a 2 piece breechblock. This cannon will
be used in the Crusader 155mm self propelled howitzer. This seal must
be fabricated from a compound which will provide sealing upon closing
and retain resiliency upon opening. It will be required to operate in
an extremely harsh environment sealing in propellant gases at a chamber
pressure of 58,800 psi while encountering high levels of residue from
the burnt propellant. In addition, the breech seal must meet
requirements for rates of fire of 12 rounds per minute, 448 rounds
fired prior to cleaning, and a seal life of 6 battlefield days or 2688
rounds. To maintain current contract schedules, the seal must be
developed by the end of April 1998. This market survey does not
