A -- REAL TIME MEASUREMENT OF DRUG CONCENTRATION IN TISSUE SOL CITPO-97-193 POC John B. Mott, Ph.D., Partnership Development and Agreements, Los Alamos National Laboratory, MS C331, Telephone (505) 665-0883, FAX (505) 667-4098, or jb_mott@lanl.gov. The University of California, which operates Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under contract to the Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking industrial partners to participate in the commercialization of an instrument for the minimally invasive, real-time, in vivo measurement of the concentration of various drugs in organs. The technology makes use of elastic scattering spectroscopy to measure the spectral modification of light introduced to the tissue through and collected with fiber-optic probes, the geometry of which is adapted to allow easy access to different organ sites. New computational techniques, which take into account the geometry of the fiber-optic probes, allow determination of the effective path histories of photons traveling through highly scattering media. This instrument, which makes use of technology similar to that now being tested for the clinical diagnosis of cancer, exists as a bench prototype and has been tested with phantom-tissue samples. We believe that the instrument, by permitting continuous time-dependent measurements of drug concentration in various organs of a single animal, has the potential to significantly reduce the time required for the pre-clinical (animal) testing phase of drug development. Industrial partners are being sought to enter into a technology transfer agreement to commercialize this technology. Partnership may include, but is not limited to, license agreements and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). Prospective partners must demonstrate experience in developing and commercializing biomedical or biological instruments, product marketing capability, and sound financial backing. Any company that is interested in pursuing this opportunity or that wishes to receive more information concerning this opportunity should respond with a brief statement describing its technical expertise, marketing capability, financial resources, estimates of the relevant market for each specific application being considered, previous technology transfer experience (if any), and motivation for participation in the program. The statement of interest must be dated within 30 days from the date of this notice. For more information about other available technologies at LANL see the DOE Technology Information Network (DTIN) at http://www.dtin.doe.gov/. (0287)
