market survey to obtain commercial information in connection with
providing library books in three different ways (on approval, on firm
order and on standing order) to the the Air University Library, Maxwell
AFB AL. 42 Contracting Squadron, Maxwell AFB AL, is conducting market
research only. No award will be made as a result of this synopsis; nor
is any solicitation material available. Information requested includes
the commercial availability of providing library services as stated
above. The Air University Library, serves as a professional military
education organization, and has a collection of approximately 429,225
books and bound periodicals. They are interested in finding vendor(s)
who supply a full range of library books. Vendors will be expected to
deveop a profile of materials appropriate to the Air University
Library's collection based on a contractor furnished extensive subject
terminology of at least 6,000 subject terms in hierarchical format.
Having developed the profile, the vendor will review newly published
books and select a wide range of titles appropriate to the library's
collection. These books will then be shipped to the Air University
Library on an approval basis. Those approved are purchased by the
Library, totaling approximately $30,000.00 per year. Those not approved
are returned to the vendor. The Library annually purchases
approximately $30,000.00 worth of titles which are on standing order.
In addition to the approval and standing order materials, the Library,
places firm orders for approximately $80,000.00 worth of books
selected by the Library staff. These books are from a wide range of
sources, large and small commercial publishers, university presses, as
well as association publishers, and not-for-profit organizations. A
substantial percentage of approval and firm order publications should
be readily from stock. Using an Integrated Library System, the Library
has an interest in all processes which can streamline the Technical
Services functions of acquisitions and cataloging, as well as an
interest in vendors currently engaged in working partnerships with
cataloging services such as OCLC, or with large commercial library
