E-MAIL: Ray Reith, reitrj@inel.gov. Detection of Highly Enriched
Uranium -- A team of three national laboratories, all operated under
contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking
expressions of interest and capability from potential sources. The
laboratory team has identified several technology areas which can
significantly contribute to the development of an active interrogation
system for the detection of highly enriched uranium (HEU). The team
desires a list of interested parties who have capabilities to address
one or more of the technology areas. The team also desires a list of
parties interested in cooperative research and development leading to
a technology demonstration system. The technology areas of interest are
listed in order of priority: 1. High-energy (>6-MeV) x-ray radiation
beams and optics (hardware and software) with particular emphasis on
transportable systems. 2. Neutron beams and optics (both hardware and
software) with particular emphasis on transportable systems. 3.
X-ray-based or neutron-based cargo container and/or passenger luggage
nonintrusive inspection technology development (particularly those
associated with FAA and U.S. Customs applications. 4. Systems
integration (hardware and software) associated with extended
capabilities of high-energy x-ray and/or neutron radiography system(s).
The program will ultimately develop an integrated system for the
detection of HEU in concealed containers, such as cargo containers and
luggage, through a combination of commercially available, real-time
radiography with active HEU interrogation. Testing and evaluation of
photon and neutron source and detection components will occur under a
variety of field applications throughout the first two years of the
development program. Further activities will support commercialization
of integrated systems through industrial partnerships. The three
Laboratories are the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Los Alamos
National Laboratory. Interested parties are asked to submit a primary
contact name (with address, telephone number, and facsimile number)
plus a brief description of applicable and existing technologies or
capabilities to Ray Reith, Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company,
P. O. Box 1625, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83415-3805. Expressions of interest
should not include detailed proposals or proprietary data. To assist in
the "Organizational Conflicts of Interest" determinations, all
submittals are also required to disclose business affiliations,
partners for teaming arrangements, sister organizations, etc. Finally,
to assist in Small Business Administration determinations, all
submittals are required to disclose business type and size. Written
expressions of interest should be received on or before November 7,
1997. This announcement is for expressions of interest only and is not
associated with any specific funding opportunity, solicitation,
procurement, assistance award, etc. (0281) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0007 19971010\A-0007.SOL)
