NIST Contracts Office, Contract@nist.gov. Sources are being sought by
the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Intelligent
Systems Division on the availability of a commercially available Laser
range imaging sensor (LADAR) which can be used for obstacle detection
on unmanned robotic ground vehicle systems operating in a rugged cross
country environment. NIST is conducting research in obstacle detection
and avoidance in support of a DOD program to develop intelligent next
generation unmanned ground vehicles for the military. Studies to date
indicate that LADAR sensors are capable of providing a robust level of
performance in the detection of vehicles, buildings, trees, gullies,
people, fences, etc. LADAR to date, however, has limitations which
restrict on-road and cross country speed. Information is sought on the
availability of a LADAR sensor which can meet the following
specifications: 1) compact, ruggedized sensing head weighing less than
15kg; 2) eye-scale, short duration (insec) pulsed lasers can usually
meet this criteria, are also better for stealthy operation, and are
harder to detect; 3) 4-10 Hz frame rate; 4) range: 3-50 meters or more;
5) range resolution 5-6 cm or better; 6) FOV: 30 degrees vertical, 60
degrees horizontal (desirable, others may be acceptable); 7) Image
format: 256 horiontal pixels or better, 128 vertical pixels or better;
8) angular resolution: horizontal .25 degrees or better, vertical .25
degrees or better; 9) desirable features (for scanning type LADAR)
programmable FOV (scan) ad frame rate. Interested parties may contact
