COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 11,1997 PSA#1906A -- NAVIGATION WARFARE CONFERENCE The Association of Old Crows (AOC)
will present its first Navigation Warfare Conference, September 24-25,
1997, at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland. William P.
Delaney, Director's Office Fellow, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, will chair
the conference. His current responsibilities include long-range
planning and support to DoD panels and studies. He has led or
participated in a number of key DoD studies on GPS. The keynote address
will be given by Mr. Michael Shaw, Office of the Undersecretary of
Defense (Space). The conference will be at the SECRET. U.S. ONLY
classification level. Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation is
increasingly becoming the backbone of military (and civilian)
navigation. It is permeating all military systems from large
sophisticated aircraft and high-end weapons to less costly weapons and
the foot soldier. The accuracy, portability, and low cost make it an
ideal navigation system. However, it does have vulnerabilities to
electronic countermeasures. The conference will provide a technical
forum on navigation warfare and the GPS and will explore GPS strengths
and vulnerabilities via a broad range of briefings by program leaders
and technical experts in GPS techniques, hardware, and usage. Topics
to be discussed include: an overview of the GPS; applications of GPS in
civilian and military systems; GLONASS, the equivalent Russian GPS
system; and the electronic warfare vulnerability of the GPS. Papers
will also cover antijam mechanisms to increase GPS resistance to
electronic attack and alternate schemes of navigation that complement
the GPS. An expert panel will discuss the long-range evolution of GPS
and potential areas of conflict between military users of the GPS and
the rapidly growing civilian GPS community. The panel will respond to
audience questions. Clearly, this conference is a "must attend" for
those managers, task leaders, customers, scientists, and engineers
engaged in navigation warfare and GPS activities, or who wish to become
aware of this important functional area. For additional information,
