giffordf@ars.usda.gov. The USDA-ARS PWA Office in Albany, CA has a
requirement for an Aroma Scanner which consists of a Benchtop chamber
and computer. The humidity controlled benchtop chamber has sensors to
insure user defined humidity levels within the chamber. Relative
humidity within in the chamber can be kept to 0.1%. 32 aroma sensors
are contained within the chamber to measure the aroma emitted from the
sample. Sensors measure 32 different polymers emitted from the sample.
A histogram is generated from the data emitted from the sample amd odor
is analyzed. The 32 polymer sensors last about 3 to 5 years. Windows
software for data processing. Advanced graphics interface allows for
plotting of data in 2 or 3 dimensional formats & an artificial neural
network allows for identification of aromas self learning the more data
presented. A 486 computer & color printer controls operation, data
acquisition and manipulation. The system presented above from Foss Food
Technology Corp. AromaScan meets our needs for an aroma scanning
identification instrument but alternate products will be considered if
they meet exceeds the capabilities of the aroma scanner presented
