work includes all labor and materials for the manufacturing and
procurment of 760 nodular iron castings, quantity 500 of 3.5 inch
castings and quantity 260 of 5 inch castings, designed as armor
protectors for submarine cable with options to purchase additional
quantities with the same specifications. The castings shall consist of
pipe-like longitudinal half sections which shall enclose cable when
assembled and secured in pairs. The interior and the exterior surfaces
of the castings shall be coasted with a corrosive inhibitor determined
by the Contractor to protect the castings from corrosion when the
castings are used underwater with marine grade fasteners. Coating will
be lead free, chromate free, and environmentally correct for
underwater use. The casting shall be furnished in a form, when
assembled, that makes a 3.5 inch or 5 inch inside diameter enclosed
section. Each casting shall have integral longitudinal flanges with
bolt holes. Castings to be furnished shall be shown on NAVFAC drawings
3026354 and 30026355. The casting shall be constructed of grade
65045-12 nodular iron in accordance with ASTM A536-84 requirements.
General configuration shall be based on pipe-like longitudinal half
sections which are to be used to enclose and protect underwater cable,
when assembled commercial tolerances shall apply. Casting thickness
shall be controlled to limit the weight of each casting while
maintaining the interior diameter suitable for inserting cable without
reducing the protection capability inherent in the design of the armor
protector. Each casting shall be constructed to permit
interchange-ability of assembled pairs, one end as assembled shall form
a spherical bell which shall match with opposite neck-end when pairs of
the castings are properly connected. Requests for the solicitation may

facsimile by using (202) 433-5244. Contractors within the local area
are encouraged to pick up a copy of the solicitation at Bldg 218 (third
floor) of the WNY between the hours of 0730 and 1500, Monday-Friday.
There will be no charge for these documents, however, there will only
be one set issued per contractor. The solicitation will be available
approximately fifteen days after this notice appears in the Commerce
Business Daily. This is an Invitation for Bids and the bid opening date
shall be thirty days after the solicitation is made available to the
public. Award shall be made to the lowest responsive, responsible
bidder. The projected award date is August 1997. Bids should be
submitted to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Contracts Office
(NAVFACCO), Bldg 218, 901 M Street, SE, WNY, Washington, DC
