COMPULSORY INDICATION ON THE LABELLING OF CERTAIN FOODSTUFFS PRODUCED
FROM GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS OF PARTICULARS OTHER THAN THOSE
PROVIDED FOR IN DIRECTIVE 79/112/EEC The following notification is
being circulated in accordance with Article 10.6. G/TBT/Notif.97.151.

name of local government involved (Articles 3.2 and 7.2). 2. Agency
responsible: European Commission. Agency or authority designated to
handle comments regarding the notification can be indicated if
different from above. 3. Notified under Article 2.9.2. 4. Products
covered (HS or CCCN where applicable, otherwise national tariff
heading. ICS numbers may be provided in addition, where applicable):
Foods and food ingredients produced from genetically modified soya and
genetically modified maize (various tariff headings). 5. Title, number
of pages and language(s) of the notified document: Draft Commission
Regulation Concerning the Compulsory Indication on the Labelling of
Certain Foodstuffs Produced from Genetically Modified Organisms of
Particulars other than those Provided for in Directive 79/112/EEC (11
pages). 6. Description of content:The draft regulation will apply the
labelling rules laid down in Article 8 of Regulation (EC) 258/97
concerning novel foods and novel food ingredients to foods and food
ingredients produced from genetically modified soya and maize
authorized under Directive 90/220/EEC. 7. Objective and rationale: To
ensure that the same labelling rules apply within the European Union to
all foods and food ingredients produced with the aid of genetically
modified organisms. Given that these foods are already being placed on
the market, measures are urgently necessary to define the labelling
