A -- MAGNETIC SECTOR, DOUBLE FOCUSING, HYBIRD MASS SPECTROMETER WITH ION TRAP DETECTOR SOL ORD#14 DUE 041597 POC Kathleen Roe, (513)366-2144, fax: (513)366-2107 WEB: Office of Acquisition Management -- Cincinnati Contracts Management Division, This RFQ will not appear on the web site.. E-MAIL: U.S. EPA -- Cincinnati Contracts Management Division, roe.kathleen@epamail.epa.gov. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), Characterization Research Division -- Las Vegas (CRD-LV) is seeking to purchase a high performance mass spectrometer (Magnetic Sector, Double Focusing, Hybrid Mass Spectrometer with Ion Trap Detector) with extensive capabilities for assessing human and environmental exposures and resultant chemical changes in living systems and the ecology. Exposures and changes will be determined through the detection, structural identification and measurement of pollutants, pollutant metabolites, bioindicators, and biological molecules of communication and natural toxins. They may be seen as induced, altered or adducted metabolic products, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, RNA and DNA. The extensive range of molecular weight, thermal stability, polarity and chemical and physical properties of these compounds and the complexity of the sample matrices they will be taken from, i.e. human and animal and plant tissues, soil, air, water, sediment and potentially all manner of environmental media, requires a variety of separation, inlet, ionization, resolution, collisionally activated decomposition MS/MS, detection, recording and data processing mass spectrometric technologies at the state-of-the-art. This is a research level instrument and must have the highest practical sensitivity to be interfaced with the high separation, but low column loading used in ultra trace analysis with such liquid introduction analytical techniques as capillary electrophoresis (CE), capillary electrokinetic chromatography (CEC), and nano-scale liquid chromatography (LC), now under study at the NERL. The instrument must be compatible with and capable of extending the NERL-CRD research program in high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), accurate mass measurements, using the mass peak profiling from selected ion recording data (MPPSIRD) technique. [Details of this technique can be found in Analytical Chemistry, Vol 68, No. 3, February 1, 1996, pages 553 to 560, available on request.] Research is planned to extend this technique to CE-electrospray ionization (ESI)-HRMS. A magnetic sector, double focusing, hybrid mass spectrometer with ion trap detector is believed to be uniquely able to fulfill these requirements. To qualify for consideration, the instrument manufacturer must furnish data from a demonstration instrument, of the same, or similar, type as proposed, showing CE/MS operation at high sensitivity, using known compounds, and stated experimental conditions. Please respond in writing via fax or e-mail. It is anticipated that Requests for Quotation will be issued shortly after the response deadline of 4/15/97. (0090)
