(Abt), under Contract No. NO1-AI-35176 with the Efficacy Trials Branch,
Division of AIDS, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
(NIAID), National Institutes of Health, is soliciting proposals from
organizations capable of participating in a multi-center seroincidence
and preparatory study and subsequent clinical trials of vaccine and
non-vaccine interventions for HIV prevention. Sites will be required to
recruit a cohort of 200 to 800 volunteers for an initial
seroepidemiologic study to document a rate of HIV seroincidence of at
least 2 per 100 person-years and a minimum retention rate of 95% at 6
months. Subsequent studies may involve multi-center, randomized,
controlled trials of preventive vaccine candidates, chemical
(microbicides) and physical barriers to sexual transmission of HIV,
behavioral interventions with HIV incidence as a primary outcome, and
other innovative approaches to HIV prevention. It is anticipated that
one to five cost-reimbursement, completiontype subcontracts for sites
in addition to the current domestic HIVNET sites will be awarded for a
period of five (5) years. The electronic version of
