& Development sources are sought for the Small Business Innovation
Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR)
programs. The NIMH OA supports basic and applied behavioral research
to understand, prevent, a nd/or change HIV high-risk behaviors, and to
sustain lower risk HIV-related behaviors over time. The NIMH
Neuro-AIDS Research Program supports research to increase our
understanding of the profound effects of HIV on the Central Nervous
System (CNS). In addition to traditional research support mechanisms
utilized by colleges and universities, the NIMH-OA also supports
HIV-related research and development initiatives proposed by small
businesses under the SBIR and STTR programs. The NIMH-OA SBIR and STTR
programs provide support to small businesses for the development of
innovative technologies and methodologies that have commercial
potential and that are relevant to the research mission of the NIMH-OA.
The NIMH-OA seeks to support SBIR and STTR research initiatives in the
following areas: 1) Behavior change and prevention; development of
innovative methods to reduce, prevent, and/or change HIV-associated
risk behaviors and relapse prevention methods, development of
innovative sch ool-based curricula to promote HIV prevention,
development of innovative curricula for training clinicians in
promoting HIV-prevention, 2) Neuro-AIDS; development of innovative
methods to detect and monitor HIV disease progression in the CNS,
development of innovative methods to diagnose and treat neurocognitive
deficits in pediatric and adult populations, development of innovative
strategies to block/reverse/treat CNS dysfunction associated with HIV
infection, 3) Neurobehavioral and psychosocial issues in HIV;
development of materials to assist people living with HIV in self-care
management, development of instruments to enhance coping skills for
families living with HIV/AIDS and, 4) AIDS mental health services
delivery; development of training curricula on HIV counseling in pre-
and post-HIV testing settings, development of methods to evaluate and
enhance clinical skills in HIV risk reduction counseling. This
