16 -- SOURCES SOUGHT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A DEORBIT PROPULSION MODULE FOR THE X-38 SPACECRAFT SOL 9-BE13-40-7-15P DUE 121096 POC Contract Specialist: Jeff Johnson, (713) 483-1862 Contract Officer: Lisa Rea Phillips, (713) 483-8395 THIS IS A SOURCES SOUGHT SYNOPSIS ONLY. NASA - Johnson Space Center is soliciting the development of a propulsion module for the Experimental Crew Return Vehicle, formally designated as X-38. The X-38 will be carried into orbit via the Ariane V or the Space Shuttle Orbiter and a propulsion module will be required to maintain on-orbit attitude control and perform the deorbit maneuver. The module will be jettisoned immediately following the deorbit maneuver. The deorbit propulsion module will be designed to satisfy the requirements of the operational CRV mission, but the delivered unit need only satisfy the requirements of the X-38 orbital test mission. The deorbit propulsion module consists of a propulsion system, primary and secondary structure and thermal control as required to satisfy the mission requirements. Command and control of the deorbit propulsion module will be provided by systems onboard the X-38 spacecraft. The deorbit propulsion module will be contained inside of a structural adapter which will be designed to transfer the launch induced loads from the launch vehicle to the X-38 spacecraft. The deorbit propulsion module itself will not carry these loads. The structural adapter will also include separation systems as required to separate from the launch vehicle and the X-38 spacecraft respectively. The structural adapter will be designed, developed and delivered as part of this activity. The design of the deorbit propulsion module shall include low cost, low development risk hardware to the greatest extent possible. Vendors who have demonstrated ability to design, fabricate and test low cost spacecraft propulsion and integrated spacecraft systems are preferred. See numbered Note 25. (0312)
