U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, BR. OF ACQUISITION & FEDERAL ASSISTANCE, P.O. BOX 25046, MS 204-B, DFC, DENVER, CO 80225

66 -- AUDIO-MAGNETOTELLURIC (AMT) INSTRUMENT SOL 1434CR96QQ00377 DUE 092696 POC Purchasing Agent, Iris D. Turner, (303)236-5900 x348 Concerns having the ability to furnish the property described herein are requested to give written notification (including the telephone number for a point of contact) to the procuring office above within forty-five (45) calendar days from the date of this synopsis. USGS has a requirement for a geoelectric survey instrument utilizing electromagnetic fields in the range of 1 to 25 kHz. Such an instrument measures Earth resistivity at depths of about 20 to 2,000m. Because it uses ambient, plane-wave, magnetic and electric (telluric) fields in the audio-frequency range, it is known as an audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) instrument. Unique equipment features: Use of an external IBM-compatible PC/DOS computer with open-software to control data acquisition and process data. This allows easier user modifications and software upgrades compared to other systems that have a built-in computer that requires downloaded proprietary software. Use of a modular design throughout the system allows reconfiguration for various survey modes. Use of a hardware and software based synchronous-detection (heterodyne) data acquisition mode at selectable AMT frequencies and bandwidths that, along with use of automatic continuous calibration, provides rapid, accurate narrow-band electromagnetic signal detection. This approach overcomes problems of signal degeneration by narrow-band analog filtering or use of wide-band FFT processing for the largely impulsive AMT signals. Based on information available at this time, and in accordance with 41 U.S.C 253(c)(1), implemented by FAR 6.302-1, the Government considers the item specified as a sole source from EMI Inc. 13015 46th Street, UCRFS Bldg 300, Richmond, CA 94804 and proposes to negotiate a contract with that firm on tha basis. However, should additional sources be identified, they will be considered. Firms who feel that they can furnish the required item or its functional equivalent (based upon the criteria specified herein) are invited to submit in writing an affirmative response to this announcement. An affirmative response would include literature, brochures and such other materials which correspond to the required items stated herein. This information will be evaluated and used to determine if competitive opportunties exist. Since no solicitation document exists, requests for such documents without accompanying information will be considered non-responsive to this request without further consideration. This notice may represent the Government's only official notice of this procurement. See Note 1 and 22(0226)
