COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 5,1996 PSA#1651Argonne National Laboratory, Building 900, Industrial Technology
Development Center, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439 A -- RESEARCH PARTNERS SOUGHT FOR GIS SOFTWARE POC Paul Betten, Case
Manager, (708) 252-4962. Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an
industrial partner to help commercialize new software that represents
a significant advance in the interactive presentation of information
and multimedia data objects on the World Wide Web. The software allows
Web-page authors to insert a variety of multimedia data objects
quickly, efficiently, and interactively. Commercial application areas
include realistic 3-D visualizations, tourism, real estate, geological
surveys, emergency planning and response, environmental modeling and
assessment, and land-use modeling. The distributed, object-oriented
geographical information system, called DOOGIS, provides distributed
access to multiple databases, presenting them as if they came from a
single database. DOOGIS distributed access involves not only multiple
servers, but also an ability to break down a single logical server into
the constituent physical servers that actually store the data. The
program provides for dynamic protocol resolution and content handling,
allowing unknown objects from a particular server to download their
handling code. Security and access privileges are negotiated
dynamically with each server contact and each access attempt. Visual
presentations can be images retrieved from geo-spatial servers, the
Java-code representation of the geographical objects passed by the
server, or a combination of the two. The software runs on Sun SPARC
workstations and PCS using Solaris 2.3, 2.4, or 2.5 and Windows NT 3.5
(PC) with Windows 95. A server having at least 32 megabytes of RAM is
also required, as are clients with 16 megabytes of RAM. Execution time
varies with network speed, with a screen update taking about 15 to 25
seconds. Modems having a speed of 14.4 Kbps or better will take an
additional 5 seconds. A Macintosh version is under development. No ANL
funds are available for the partner's share of R & D efforts. Please
direct inquiries to the DOOGIS Case Manager at Argonne, National
Laboratory, ITD-900, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439; fax
