NO REIMBURSEMENT OF ANY COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PROVIDING INFORMATION WILL BE MADE. The Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center is seeking information on wastewater treatment equipment capable of removing contaminates from wastewaters generated during fire fighter training operations so that the water can be reused subsequent training operations. Fire fighting training operations are conducted in facilities specially designed to simulate shipboard fires. Propane burners are used to simulate flames, a hydraulic fluid (butylated triphenyl phosphate) is heated and atomized over the flame to create smokelike conditions, and an aqueous solution, containing an additive with similar properties to fire fighting chemicals, is used to fight the flames. The additive, injected at a 3 percent by volume concentration, is a surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, commercial name: CALSOFT). Limited existing wastewater characterization data is available. The following data are anticipated concentration ranges, expressed as milligrams per liter, for several parameter: total dissolved solids 2,625 to 132,461; total suspended solids 5 to 5,146; oil and grease 6 to 30; surfactants 3,400; biological oxygen demand 10 to 219; and chemical oxygen demand 290 to 120,000.
