COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 30,1996 PSA#1605VERTICAL CAVITY SURFACE EMITTING LASERS Sandia National Laboratories is
seeking potential licensee(s) for - Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting
Laser, (VCSEL) technology. US patents #5,351,256, #4,947,223,
#5,258,990, #5,428,634; plus over 10 patents pending. This suite of
proprietary technologies includes both devices and the methods for
their manufacture. VCSELs as the name implies, emit light out of the
surface of the lasers active medium, as opposed to horizontally out of
the edge. This configuration offers many advantages in the device's
fabrication, testing, physical/performance characteristics and
application. We are in now in the process of developing a strategy for
licensing these lab-developed technologies. Currently, Sandia is
looking for expressions of interest from companies who have both the
interest and the ability to take Sandia VCSEL technologies to market.
Successful companies should possess capabilities for the manufacture of
compound semiconductor devices and a demonstrated ability to
commercialize the technology. Sandia had been involved with the
development of VCSEL technology since the 1980's. Sandia has been
applying this technology for over five years, including work for
partners such as the Department of Defense, Advanced Research Program
Assistance (ARPA) office. Continued R&D into VCSELs is Sandia's plan,
and with it, the promise of additional intellectual property. Sandia is
a government-owned, contractor-operated facility with locations in New
Mexico and California. As a research and development laboratory for
the Department of Energy (DOE), we have been working on high technology
solutions to problems of national importance for over 40 years. We are
now able to grant commercial licenses to our intellectual property and
watch technologies go from ``lab to market''. We look forward to the
possibility of working with your company as well as bringing VCSEL
technologies to the marketplace. In order to fulfill fairness of
opportunity requirements, Sandia will widely advertise both the
technology and the fact that it may be licensed. Depending upon any
prior commitments, the license can take a variety of forms, up to and
including the opportunity for an exclusive license. Through a variety
of possible marketing venues including: advertisements in the Commerce
Business Daily, trade publications, the Internet, targeted mail
campaigns, and trade shows, we accomplish the broad announcement of
licensing opportunities. Visit our World Wide Web site at
(http://www.sandia.gov/ttrans/ttrans.html). Please be advised that this
is not an offer for the sale of a license; but rather a solicitation of
interested parties for potential license opportunities. You and other
potential licenses, must respond in writing with express either by
writing or faxing us a brief statement of capabilities to commercialize
and interest in the technology. The deadline for accepting respondents
is June 7, 1996. Write to: Joanne Trujillo, Sandia National
Laboratories, Technology Partnerships Dept., PO Box 5800 -MS 1380,
Albuquerque, NM 87185-1380, FAX: (505) 843-4175. After you contact us,
we will send you a short questionnaire to assess in greater detail you
company's capabilities for commercializing the technology. Preference
will be given to US based businesses. From there, Sandia will evaluate
all replies. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and
your company on the desired goal of commercialization of VCSEL
technology. Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0620 19960529\SP-0001.MSC)
