Contract Specialist, 202/874-3256. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing
(BEP) is seeking sources to supply a offline system to inspect and
evaluate the quality of all United States Currency denominations ($1,
$2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100). Based on the print quality
evaluations, the system must control the operation of the BEP's
existing Processing Equipment to direct acceptable and unacceptable
currency into separate piles. Types of Flaws: The system must detect
printing and non-printing flaws on the printed sheet. In addition, the
system must also evaluate the registration of the printed image in
relation to the security thread and watermark used on the higher
currency denominations. Inspection Resolution: A currency sheet has an
area of approximately .338 m2 (524 inches2). The inspection system
must be capable of detecting changes in print density from 10% to 100%
based on the opaque area of a screen containing 150 lines per inch.
The system must be capable of detecting the presence of flaws in both
the printed and non-printed areas of a note ranging in size from .030
to .125 inches square. Production Rate: At a minimum, the rate of
inspection and processing must be performed on up to 7,000 sheets per
hour (2 sheets/second). A draft specification will be issued to all
interested sources for comment as well as for information purposes. The
Government does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this
specification, or otherwise pay for the information solicited. All
interested sources should request a copy of the draft specification
within fifteen (15) days after publication of this notice. Comments on
the draft specification and information requested should be submitted
to the BEP no later than May 31, 1996. Request should be submitted in
