R -- PROJECT TO INCREASE METRIC USE IN CHILDREN'S MEDIA SOL 52SBNB6C9104 DUE 050996 POC Sandra Febach (301) 975-6326 The National Institute of Standards and Technology has a requirement to provide support for implementation of the Department of Commerce's metric conversion efforts. Working with the Interagency Council on Metric Policy (ICMP), NIST is implementing a plan that encourages a broad national dialogue on metric conversion. Under the banner ''Toward a Metric America,'' the plan includes meetings and workshops, information and awareness campaigns, consultations with industry and the public, and other outreach programs. NIST requires contractor support to help accelerate national metrication and increase public awareness and interest in the metric system of measurement. The purpose of this contract is to help increase children's early exposure to the metric system of measurement. The contractor shall conduct research to determine the present nature, amount, and location of metric use in children's media. Then working with the Metric Program, the contractor shall brainstorm and plan the steps/procedures that could be used to increase children's exposure to the metric system of measurement at an early age. The focus shall be on reaching the largest audience possible with informative material presented in a way that is interesting and fun. This task shall include contact with producers and curriculum advisors of children's media. The contractor shall explore the possibilities of getting business sponsorship of efforts to increase children's exposure to metric units. The contractor shall provide all necessary services and public relations efforts to implement a pilot project that increases the awareness, acceptance, and teaching of the metric system of measurement in at least one segment of children's media. The period of performance is expected to be approximately 26 weeks. It is anticipated that the type of contract will be firm-fixed-price.
