B -- REPORT FOR PROCESS MONITORING FOR PRODUCTION OF ALGINATE MICROCAPSULES AND SYNTHESIS OF FLUORESCENTLY LABELED PROTEINS AND SURFACES SOL 52SBNB6C9098 DUE 041896 POC Kathleen Lettofsky (301) 975-6342 The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to acquire the services of a polymer chemist for a base year of date of award of contract through September 30, 1996 and one option year of October 1, 1996 through September 30, 1997. The services shall be performed at NIST. The contractor shall prepare a report from the following work to be performed in the base year: 1) Synthesize from p-(N,N-dihydroxyethylamino)benzoic acid and methacryloyl chloride a derivative of benzoic acid anhydride with two methacrylate groups; 2) Synthesize from p- (N-methylamino)benzoic acid and chloroethyl methacrylate a drivative of benzoic acid anhydride with a methacrylate group and 3) Monitor by fluorescence spectroscopy the extent of reaction of each of the aforementioned anhydrides with alginate. The contractor shall prepare a report from the following work to be performed in the option year: 1) Monitor by fluorescence spectroscopy the extent of photoinduced crosslinking of fluorescently labeled alginate containing methacrylate groups; 2) Synthesize fluorescently labeled proteins and 3) prepare fluorescently labeled glass surfaces of optical fibers.
