Carol Nesel, 301/738-8337. The National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development (NICHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
announces subcontracting opportunities under an ongoing contract with
Westat, Inc. Through this contract NICHD sponsors a network of clinical
centers which participate in clinical trials of therapies to prevent
mother to child transmission of HIV infection and to treat pediatric
HIV disease. It is the intent of NICHD and Westat to award additional
subcontracts to expand patient access to trails. Preference will be
given to clinical centers which can conduct both perinatal and
pediatric protocols, which have no other source of NIH funding for
HIV-related clinical trials, and which are in areas where patients do
not have reasonable access to existing clinical centers. Interested
organizations should submit five copies of a statement of capabilities
which must include the following: 1) a description of staff
qualifications (include CVs of the proposed pediatric Principal
Investigator (PI), obstetric PI if an obstetric component is included);
2) description of HIV-related and non-HIV-related research experience
(types and number of studies including drug trails, natural history
studies, etc., total patient enrollment per study); 3) a description of
existing clinics for HIV-infected women (pregnant and non-pregnant) and
children, number of HIV-infected pregnant women and HIV-exposed and
infected children seen in the clinics annually (include a description
of disease stage and anti-retroviral treatment experience of children
seen in clinic); 4) a description of the physical facilities where
trails would be conducted (including access to inpatient facilities,
such as GCRC, for phase 1 trails); and 5) description of existing
access to clinical trails for HIV-infected women and any alternative
access to clinical trials for HIV-infected children in your geographic
area. Capability statements addressing all of the above should be
