Tina B. McQuire, 202/874-2451. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing
(BEP) is seeking industry comments on a draft specification for a six
(6) color offset printing and finishing system. The specification
describes a turnkey installation of an offset press with the following
capabilities: (a) web paper; (b) printing six colors with nonheatset
inks; (c) two sided printing where turning bars are acceptable; (d)
quality printing of 250 line screen (38.75 lines per square centimeter)
and a 15% gain at 50% density; (e) printing on coated, highly
calendered uncoated, and high quality commercial offset papers; and (f)
automatic registration and web guides. Additionally, integrated with
the press are finishing units capable of (a) sequential numbering of
multiple documents in one repeat length; (b) slitting; (c) perforating;
(d) die cutting; (e) sheeting; (f) marginal hole punching; (g) fan
folding; and (h) batch stacking. The printing and finishing system
controls will be digital and located in one central control console.
Included in this specification is training for BEP operating and
maintenance personnel; spare parts; technical documentation; and
testing. All interested parties may request a copy of the draft
specifications, in writing, at the address listed above, or by telefax
at (202) 874-2200. All comments should be returned to the BEP no later
than January 12, 1996. Industry comments will be reviewed for technical
merit and possibly incorporated in the final specifications. The
Government will not be obligated to pay for information generated as a
