COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF OCTOBER 20,1995 PSA#1456CANADA: HONEY WINE The following notification is being circulated in
accordance with Article 10.6. G/TBT/Notif. 95.293. 1. Member to
Agreement notifying: CANADA. If applicable, name of local government
involved (Articles 3.2 and 7.2): 2. Agency responsible: Health Canada.
3. Notified under Article 2.9.2. 4. Products covered (HS or CCCN where
applicable, otherwise national tariff heading. ICS numbers may be
provided in addition, where applicable): Honey wine. 5. Title and
number of pages of the notified document: Proposed Amendment to the
Food and Drug Regulations (Schedule No. 970) (pages 3197-3199). 6.
Description of content: Provision currently exists in the Food and Drug
Regulations for the use of the preservative sorbic acid in the
production of wine, cider and related products to a maximum of 500
parts per million (ppm). A submission has been received to permit the
use of sorbic acid in honey wine at the same level. This additional use
of sorbic acid was evaluated from the standpoint of safety and
efficacy, and is considered acceptable. The current standard for honey
wine in the Food and Drug Regulations states that honey wine ``shall
be the product of the alcoholic fermentation of honey'', when in fact
an aqueous solution of honey is actually used in commercial production.
Therefore, it is proposed to amend the Regulations to permit the use of
sorbic acid in honey wine at 500 ppm and to make a minor wording change
to the standard to provide for the addition of water to the honey prior
to its fermentation in the preparation of honey wine. 7. Objective and
rationale: Protection of human safety. 8. Relevant documents: Canada
Gazette, Part I, 9 September 1995. 9. Proposed date of adoption and
entry into force: Not stated. 10. Final date for comments: 23 November
