Kaliveas, (301) 295-2247. The Naval Medical Research and Development
Command is augmenting its advanced technology demonstration research
program for freeze-dried preservation of human red blood cells and
platelets. The objectives of the program are directed at developing and
demonstrating, a) lyophilization procedures for red cells and
platelets, b) reconstitution of the freeze-dried product, and c) safety
and efficacy of the rehydrated product. All proposals will be evaluated
using the following criteria: scientific quality, availability of
appropriate facilities, demonstrated expertise and realistic costs.
Proficiency must be in the areas of red cell and/or platelet
preservation, large scale manufacturing capability, or safety and
efficacy demonstrations for pre-clinical development of blood products
in support of and Investigational New Drug application to the Food and
Drug Administration. Proposals describing a period of performance of
between one and three years, beginning in fiscal year 1996, will be
considered. Proposals must be received by the close of business on
