A -- LASERNET OPTICAL OIL MONITOR POC Point of Contact: R. Bradley, ONR 254 (703) 696-8373. The Office of Naval Research has developed an Accelerated Capabilities Initiative (ACI) to support the Chief of Naval Operations' goal of moving the Navy to Condition Based Maintenance. The objective of this ACI is rapid insertion of both advanced mechanical diagnostics and new maintenance training technologies into fleet systems to facilitate the transition to Condition Based Maintenance. Under the auspices of the ACI, ONR is sponsoring a research effort being conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). This effort is directed at the production of an optical monitor that is capable of detection and identification of wear debris particles suspended in lubricating oil of machinery, and can be extended to detection of particulate contamination of hydraulic fluid and fuels. The LASERNET Fines wear debris monitor is designed to detect particles in the size range from 3 to 100 microns. Particles in this size range can arise from wear debris, ingested sand or debris from ceramic bearings in lubricating systems, or particulate contamination in hydraulic or fuel systems. The LASERNET monitor will determine particle concentration, rate of production and shape of particles in various size ranges. The severity of the fault will be determined from the particle size distribution and rate of production. The severity of fault will be indicated from a combination of particle morphology, size distribution and rate of production. RFP NOOO14-96-R-XXXX solicits proposals for the design and development of a LASERNET Optical Oil Monitor. The successful offeror shall participate as a member of the Integrated Product Development Team, shall provide to the Navy the design of the monitor, and upon Navy approval of the design, shall construct and deliver five (5) demonstration monitors for use in the Fleet. Firms wishing to receive this RFP shall submit their written requests (telephonic requests will not be honored) to Mr. Brian Bradley, ONR 254, Office of Naval Research, 800 North Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22217-5660 or Internet address, bradleb@onrhq.onr.navy.mil. Requests for this RFP will be honored for 45 days from appearance of this notification. (0278)
