COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF SEPTEMBER 20,1995 PSA#1435IN-SITU MEASUREMENT OF PARTICLE SIZES Sandia National Laboratories has
developed and patented (U.S. Patent No. 4,441,816), a method for
in-situ measurement of particle sizes. The size information is obtained
by scanning an image of the particle across a double-slit mask and
observing the transmitted light. This method is useful when the
particle size of primary interest is 3 mu m and larger (e.g.) in situ
measurements in fossil fuel combustion systems. The technique is well
suited to applications in which the particles are non-spherical and
have unknown refractive index. It is particularly well suited to high
temperature environments in which the particle incandescence provides
the light source. The system is very simple and low cost; the signal
from each particle is very simple, thus minimizing the complexity of
the signal processing; the measurement volume is small, so that high
particle densities can be accommodated; the size information is
obtained from a single detector, so that the high optical sensitivity
of photomultiplier tubes can be realized; knowledge of refractive index
is not required thus making the system simpler; and particle velocity
as well as can be measured. This is not a solicitation. Parties
interested in licensing this invention are invited to submit a letter
of interest providing information about the company, area of potential
application for the technology, and a point of contact. Letters should
be sent to Joanne Trujillo, MS 1380, Sandia National Laboratories, P.O.
