shin guards sought. The US Army Soldier Systems Command (SSCOM),
located at Natick, MA is interested in locating manufacturers which are
or will shortly be commercially producing shinguards. SSCOM is
searching for INFORMATION ONLY from manufacturers who currently have or
will have uniquely designed shin/knee guards which meet or could be
easily modified for mass production to meet the following requirements:
(1) Cover and protect the knee and shin a soldier from kicks and hand
thrown projectiles such as rocks, sticks, and glass; coverage for the
instep is desired by not required; (2) Include interior padding, which
would cushion the impact of objects hitting the cover/shell; (3) Made
of high quality materials, easy to clean and maintain; (4) Design
includes flexibility at the knee and ankle joints; (5) Include
protection at flexibility points, although this is not as crucial as
protection at the knee and shin; (6) Provide for attachment to the body
by ADJUSTABLE fasteners and straps which are simple to operate, and
which allow for quick removal by medical personnel; (7) Padding should
extend outside the cover/shell and form an area of additional coverage
(often referred to as ''wings'' on standard catchers equipment); (8)
Must be sized to fit persons with a knee height (measured from the
floor to mid-knee, excluding height added by footgear) from 16.4 inches
(41.67 cm) to 21.72 inches (55.16 cm), with a minimum number of sizes;
(9) Shaped to curve and conform with the natural curvature of the
knee, leg, and ankle; (10) Subdued color (black preferred) compatible
with one or all of the current Battle Dress Uniform Woodland Camouflage
colors; (11) Flame retardant at least to the standard of 50/50 -
nylon/cotton twill fabric. (12) Capable of being used and stored under
climatic conditions ranging from minus 60 degrees F to plus 160
degrees F. Information should include available technology, product
literature and illustrations/photographs, any supportive performance
information, cost of the item(s), and relevant company background/
