(301) 402-3406/7. NIH intends to procure on a sole source basis the
Montgomery County Public Schools, Carver Educational Services Center,
850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, Maryland, 20850, for the requirement
to impplement a program designated to facilitate the improvement of
mathematics and science education at the secondary school level.
Specifically, the contractor will provide the following services; The
contractor will coordinate Science Communication Workshops, prepare
materials to be uploaded to NIH EDNET on the World Wide Web, collect
materials on biomedical information to be available on-line and in
hardcopy to supplement textbooks, expand and coordinate the pedagogical
aspects of the NIH Speakers Bureau, coordinate the ''Young Women's
Network'' Brown Bag Series and coordinate the activities of Montgomery
County Public School student and teacher interns on the National
Institutes of Health campus. The period of performance will be for one
(1) twelve month period with options to renew for four (4) additional
one-year periods. It is believed that Montgomery County Public Schools
is the sole-source for this requirement under the authority of FAR
6.302-1 because of the following: In order to continue the
implementation of the science education initiative mandated by
Presidential Executive Order 12821, entitled ''Improving Mathematics
and Science Education in Support of National Education Goals'', it is
imperative that the contract be awarded to a vendor who is intimately
familiar with the NIH Office of Science Education and its programs. For
the past several years, the Montgomery County, Maryland Public School
System has worked closely with the Office of Science Education in
developing and implementing science education programs that emphasize
the importance of biomedical research as an integral part of the
learning process. This partnership has resulted in the creation of an
extensive internship program for hish school students. The Montgomery
County, Maryland Public School System has demonstrated a strong
commitment to preparing students for careers in biomedical research as
well as the emerging biotechnology industry through a vriety of
innovative science education programs. The Montgomery County, Maryland
Public School System will assign staff to this project during the past
three years. Any competing firm that is able to provide the above
requirement is invited to demonstrate that capability to the Contract
