V -- DEMINERALIZERS & SERVICES TO PROCESS SOLID RADWASTE SOL N00181-95-R-0107 POC Nancy Hayden, Code 531.4A, (804) 396-8346; Nancy Hassell-Sitar, Code 531, (804) 396-8346 The Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) intends to solicit for design of demineralizers and the purchase thereof, and for services for solid radwaste processing, volume reduction and disposal. The requirement includes: design of a stainless steel demineralizer pressure vessel meeting ASME boiler code specifications (ASME Boiler Code stamp req'd); loading (charging) of demineralizers with resin(s) and/or activated charcoal; hydrostatic testing of demineralizers after charging; sluicing of spent resin and/or charcoal; recharging demineralizers with new resin(s) and/or charcoal; dewatering spent resin and/or charcoal in dewaterable poly hics; incineration of spent resin and/or charcoal; drying of spent resin and/or charcoal and using as overfill in burial containers; quantum catalytic extraction of spent resin and/or charcoal; melting and controlled reuse of radioactive and radioactively contaminated scrap metals; transportation of waste to processing facility; transportation of processed waste to a licensed low-level radwaste burial site per 49 CFR and site regulation; disposal of processed waste at burial site; transportation of charged demineralizers from processing facility to NNSY; leasing of strong tight cargo containers meeting 49CFR requirements for shipping of LSA radioactive materials from NNSY to processing facility and charged contaminated demineralizers from processing facility to NNSY; providing records, reports and date to monitor contractor compliances. Estimated quantities and volumes: (8) demineralizers, 97 cu/ft resin/charcoal to be processed and/or buried, 2,000 lbs for metal melting. The period of performance will be for 12 months.
