The Naval Research Laboratory intends to negotiate on an other than full and open competitive basis with ABLE Engineering Company. The unique features of the ADAMS mast, manufactured by ABLE Engineering, include articulated longerons with doubly hinged longeron-to-batten joint design for retractable stowage during launch of a space vehicle. NRL will be able to substitute our own piezoelectric actuator stacks or proof-mass actuators for several of the vendor-supplied longerons and battens to provide active damping for vibration suppression studies. The deployable ADAMS mast is similar in construction to a fixed mast that has served as an NRL laboratory test apparatus. The vibration suppression techniques developed with fixed mast are readily adaptable to the deployable ADAMS mast. It is important to note that only the deployable mast is space qualifiable and that ABLE Engineering holds the patent for the doubly-hinged longeron-to-batten design that enables the mast to be deployed and retracted.
